It's Newsletter Time - Lit Quiz, Junior Chapters, Pizza Challenge.....

Library Newsletter

Books

The Kids’ Lit Quiz was held on Tuesday 7th May and Waterloo School was represented by a team of 4 awesome
readers - Coco Holland-Waterson, Purna Amarnath Patel, Genaya Baker and Dheeren Nouthalapati.  These kids crammed their brains with all things literature and did really well on the day despite being one of only three Year 6 teams (there were approximately 50 teams in total and all were Year 7 and 8).  The quiz master asked 100 questions (divided into ten categories) - all book based, and all completely random. It’s really pretty cool to be part of a day that is devoted to ‘the sport of reading’ and the initiative is well worth following - go to https://www.kidslitquiz.com/home.php to see how it all works, and to see which school from NZ will be heading to the final which is to be held in Singapore this year.

A collection  of junior chapters - a step between picture books and purple dots -  will be added to the shelves today. These are the books that have been pulled from the purple dot books, and are now known as Yellow Dot Books.  I am finding that a lot of our younger readers are keen to make that leap to a chapter book, but some of those purple dots are just too tricky for them at this point.  Hopefully this will bridge the gap and allow them to feel like they are taking a chapter book home and give them the confidence to move forward in their reading.

The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge has begun!  The kids wishing to participate in this reading initiative (read 7 books
and get a free pizza) have all been issued their pizza wheels and are keen as mustard.  All children have been
advised to read the same level of book they would normally choose, and to take their time with this - the pizza
wheels do not expire until December 3rd this year.  Books signed off may include chapter chat books currently
being read in the senior classes. If parents are reading to their children in the evenings, once this book is finished
these can also be signed off.  All wedges to be signed of by a teacher or myself and then any finished
pizza wheels need to be stamped with a Waterloo School stamp.
Then it is pizza time!!

Resources

Over term 2 I will be locating all the books that have CD’s in them and finding a new home for them - currently
they are in the picture book area and most of the CD’s are missing.  To prevent this from happening in the future
I plan to house them in a space that the teachers can access, and these books can be used in the classroom, or in
the library. With that being said if anyone has a wee CD stereo that they don’t use, and would
be willing to donate to the library I’d be forever grateful!

Coming Up in Term 2 in the Library ….

We will be welcoming a new champion for the Scholastic book club - Jenny Fraser.   There will be a book club
brochure out toward the middle of the term, so keep an eye out for that.  Generally
we will tend to do one book club brochure per term.

I’d like to thank Debbie Hamblyn for all her work in the past with the Scholastic book club!
