Library Newsletter - Chapter Chat, Flat Stanley and Pizza!

LIBRARY NEWSLETTER

Books!
The Lucky Dip books were tried out on a Year 6 class last week…...and I was cleaned out.  The kids were really into
the idea of getting a book that was a complete surprise and there were actually no books left for the next class!
So - I’m busy sorting out the next load of Lucky Dip books and I think I will bring them out for a few classes
every week to enable everyone to have a turn.  The beauty of this is I could tailor the book choices to year groups
each week as well.

We have a number of titles in the library which are well-read and barely see the shelves - the Daisy Meadow Fairy
books, for example.  Or the Horrid Henry books. Another popular read are the Jeff Brown books - Flat Stanley.
And I only just learnt the other week that there is an online resource called The Flat Stanley Project - a literacy
project that engages readers of all ages and connects schools around the world.  Basically, the kids send a flat
visitor in an envelope to another school, a family member or anyone of interest and the recipient returns the flat guy,
often with other items of interest - a journal, or souvenirs - photos, postcards etc.   There are also curriculum links
and various updates from the creator of the project, Dale Hubert. One of our very own teachers - Aimee Cunningham -
takes part in this project. Check out the site  http://www.flatstanleyproject.com/

Resources

A set of new books were purchased for the Term 2 Chapter Chat - Fish In A Tree.  Chapter Chat is a fantastic
initiative involving schools around NZ, run via a Twitter platform, and based around a chapter book which is read
aloud in class.  Each week a chat is conducted that is centred around a set of questions based on the book in question.
Fish In A Tree will also be available in the school library from Term 2.

Coming Up in Term 2 in the Library ….

The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge is back in term 2. This is another highly successful reading initiative that also involves
pizza - winning!    Pizza wheels will be issued to the children and they must read seven books (and have each wedge
stamped and signed by a teacher or myself) to then be able to redeem the wheel for a 333 pizza from Hell Pizza.
This was really popular last year!

Junior Chapter books - keep an eye out for a new space coming to the library soon that will house junior chapter books.
Even more junior than the purple dots….but still chaptery enough to make the younger ones in our school feel like they
are getting a chapter.  These have been pulled from the purple dots, will be re-dotted, and made available over the first
half of term 2. This in turn will make the Purple dot section more cohesive in its purpleness with regard to reading ability.
